#BlackTeachersMatter
Under the guidance of Dr. Jillian Ford, Associate Professor of Social Studies Education, and Dr. Natasha Thornton, Assistant Professor of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, students within the BCOE formed #BlackTeachersMatter. The purpose of this Registered Student Organization (RSO) is to support and enrich the experiences of undergraduate Black students in the BCOE. This supports begins at matriculation and continues all the way through graduation. Learning about and engaging in research is one primary avenue for student enrichment. After studying critical theory and research methods in the summer of 2018, the students submitted proposals to one local and two national conferences during the 2018-2019 academic year. It is the hope that the students will be able to build networks and engage in dialogues that will benefit them well beyond graduation. For more information on #BlackTeachersMatter, contact the organization directly at btm.pr.ksu@gmail.com.
The College Diabetes Network at Kennesaw State University
With a strong focus on combating ableism and raising awareness regarding invisible disabilities and chronic illnesses, students with Type 1 Diabetes and Dr. Ann M. Bennett, Assistant Professor of Reading Education and a Type 1 Diabetic herself, formed The College Diabetes Network at Kennesaw State University, or The CDN at KSU. This RSO exists as a local chapter of the national organization known as The College Diabetes Network. This mission of The CDN at KSU is to provide students with peer support and connections as they transition into college life and independence while living with Type 1 Diabetes. Additionally, the organization seeks to provide students with both resources and experts to navigate the stigmas surrounding disability and chronic illness and to address any accompanying mental health needs. For more information on The CDN at KSU, contact the organization directly at ksu@collegediabetesnetwork.org.
